Check
Your king is attacked; you must answer the threat immediately.
Capture
A move that removes an opponent’s piece from the board.
Fork
One piece attacks two or more targets at the same time.
Pin
A piece cannot safely move because a more valuable piece is behind it.
Development
Bringing pieces from their starting squares into useful play.
Tempo
One move of time; gaining a tempo means improving while creating a threat.
Read the last move
What changed? Which lines opened, closed, or became attacked?
Scan forcing moves
Check your checks, captures, and direct threats - then your opponent’s.
Compare candidates
Choose at least two legal ideas and test the opponent’s best reply.
